Coppull

Coppull has a number of wills surviving from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Below is a list from the catalogue of wills kept at the Lancashire records office. A number of wills have been lost since they were catalogued in the late 19th century and where I am aware of this loss, I have noted it against the will.

The final columns, headed £, s and d, shows the value of their estate if their will is accompanied by a probate inventory. These inventories are often very detailed and a valuable source of information for the local historian.

Some of the wills have been transcribed and this transcription appears on the site. Where I have a transcription, the forename of the person appears in blue and is underlined. The process of transcription began in about 1992 and is ongoing. The early transcriptions retain the original 17th and 18th century spellings and abbreviations but the later transcriptions, comprising the bulk of the collection, have been made using speech recognition software and therefore appear in modern spelling. I would therefore recommend that anyone using the contents of these wills for research purposes consult the originals in Lancashire Record Office, or the Public Records Office if the exact quotation is required. A detailed reference and the location of the original can be found here.
